Child Safeguarding Policy

Tayside Opera recognises its duty of care under the Children and Young Persons Act 1963, the Child (Performances) Regulations 1968, the Protection of Children Act 1999 and the Protection of Children (Scotland) Act 2003.

Tayside Opera supports the inclusion of young people in the enjoyment and performance of opera. We are committed to encouraging the participation of young people in these works, and therefore do not have a minimum age for membership. Minor children under the age of 16 who wish to be full-time members must however attend with a parent or other adult guardian, who will be responsible for their safety and wellbeing during rehearsals and performances.

When minor children are involved in performances on a more ad-hoc basis, for instance as part of an opera which requires a children’s chorus, our Child Safeguarding Policy comes into effect to protect children from harm. The Policy also applies to any vulnerable adults who may be members or involved in any way in our productions.

All members of the company accept their responsibilities to develop awareness of the issues which can cause children harm. Tayside Opera believes that:

  • the welfare of the child is paramount.

  • all children have the right to protection from abuse.

  • all suspicions and allegations of abuse should be taken seriously and responded to swiftly and appropriately.

  • all members of the company should be clear how to respond appropriately.

The company will ensure that:

  • all children will be treated equally and with respect and dignity.

  • the duty of care to children will always be put first.

  • bullying will not be accepted or condoned.

  • all adult members of the company provide a positive role model for dealing with other people.

  • action will be taken to stop any inappropriate verbal or physical behaviour.

Tayside Opera further undertakes:

  • to keep up to date with health and safety legislation.

  • to be informed of changes in legislation and policies for the protection of children.

  • to undertake relevant development and training.

  • to hold a register of every child involved in its productions.

  • to retain a contact name and number for each child in case of emergencies

Tayside Opera will have a dedicated Child Protection Officer (CPO) before any minors covered by this Policy are engaged in any capacity within the company. The CPO will be in charge of ensuring

that the Child Safeguarding Policy and procedures are adhered to.

This policy will be regularly monitored by the Committee of Tayside Opera and will

be subject to annual review.
